So, what happens when your young palaeontologists grow up and turn into adolescent Grumpasaurus Rexes? Thankfully the Jurassic Coast offers some great options to keep those tough to please teenagers satisfied, from our plethora of outdoor activities to some quirky food and drink options.

Shop for vintage bargains

A popular activity that appeals to all ages is browsing Dorset and East Devon’s selection of vintage and charity shops for a memorable Jurassic Coast souvenir.

Several of our local Towns & Villages make for great shopping destinations with plenty of independent and quirky options – be sure to give Lyme Regis, West Bay and Weymouth a try. The West Dorset town of Bridport is also renowned for its distinctive Vintage Quarter, with a monthly vintage market that is well worth a visit.

The Jurassic Coast offers some appealing casual outdoor dining options where the whole family can enjoy themselves after a day’s walking or cultural activities.

Try the range of fish and chip, ice cream and doughnuts outlets in West Bay or Weymouth, or Lyme Regis’ selection of sea front dining options, some of which come with deck chairs. Just be sure to watch out for seagulls trying to nick your lunch from above!

Go off the beaten track

If you’ve already sampled our tried and true activities like fossil hunting and got your selfie at Durdle Door, it’s time to find somewhere more obscure that will appeal to your teens’ unique sense of style.

The always intriguing Isle of Portland is a great option, full of weird and wonderful sights, walks and pit-stops that are guaranteed to crack a smile from even the toughest critics. Be sure to check out the stone sculptures at Tout Quarry – it’s a great spot for aspiring photographers, where the arts and spectacular coastal backdrops combine.

Café culture

Lattes and wifi make for a powerful combination to keep family squabbles to a minimum and ensure everyone gets a relaxing break with their caffeine fix. Keep an eye on our list of the Jurassic Coast’s Food & Drink outlets for a recommended destination near you.

Hit the high seas

If you can convince your tribe to head to sea, there are some great options available in Dorset and East Devon. These include coasteering, which provides a great opportunity for fun with an added dash of adrenaline. Stand-up paddleboarding has surged in popularity in recent years, and there are multiple places on the coast that hire out boards and provide lessons for newcomers.

Plan your Duke of Edinburgh experience

With miles and miles of walking paths, the Jurassic Coast makes a great Duke of Edinburgh destination. Why not use your family trip here to encourage your budding explorers to find a favourite trail, such as the wilderness of the Undercliffs Reserve or the spectacular rolling hills of Purbeck.
